We stopped at the visitor center. Due to budget cuts, there aren't any bus tours with rangers taking you around the ranch. Instead, they provide you with a CD and it's now a driving tour. It still is a working ranch. We didn't see any herefords but did see deer, buffalo, and longhorns. And, of course, a few birds. His ranch runs along the Pedernales River. Now, you would think it would be pronounced ped-er-nal-s, wouldn't you. Well, that's the way the Spanish pronounced it so of course, Texicans need to pronounce it differently. It all started with James Polk Johnson. Oh, the pronounciation: perd-en-al-s. I'm posting a couple of pictures but way more on the Kodak gallery.
Before we drove to the ranch, we stopped at a Living History Farm. This farm is a working farm. They make their own food, raise animals, and the windmill is a working windmill since no electric. Maybe I'll make another blog about that.
Back to talking about the ranch. This first picture is his home where he raised his children. It's called a dogtrot house. The center is open to keep it cooler during the Texas hot summers.
This picture is the old roadway to the Texas White House. They used to drive across it. There's an old secret service hut at the beginning of this old roadway (no longer in use).
This is the Texas White House. They have tours for $1. A ranger does take you on this tour. We didn't take the tour on this day, just couldn't walk any more. We thought we did well walking around the settlement and the living history farm. We'll go back soon and take this tour and there's still a couple of movies that we haven't seen.
